Every summer: construction sites are necessary, but they also cause traffic disruptions. We give you a complete overview of all construction sites and their duration in the city.

This year's construction sites focus on climate-friendly redesigns, as well as preservation and renovation measures on existing buildings. For important streets it’s time to “get off the asphalt”. The bridge renovation program also continues. Apart from that, several other projects are still being worked on.

Wieden main street

The round of design projects has already begun. On Wiedner Hauptstraße, 2.550 meters of track will be replaced and 6 stops will be converted or newly built. The work extends from Karlsplatz to Trappelgasse and is expected to last until the end of November. During this time, tram lines 1 and 62 as well as the Badener Bahn cannot operate in this area; access options for residents will be maintained. Wiedner Hauptstraße cannot be driven along in sections for the duration of the work.

Universitätsstrasse

In the major Universitätsstrasse project, the tram tracks are now being brought into their final position following the subway work on the surface. In addition, space will be created for structurally separated cycle paths. During the work, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, the crossing options from Ebendorferstrasse towards Rooseveltplatz and Landesgerichtsstrasse will remain open. University Street itself cannot be driven lengthways. Tram line 43 will therefore be short-run until the beginning of September; line 44 will be canceled during this time - line 33 will take over part of the route.

Wagram Street

Wagramer Straße has been completely rebuilt since April 16th between Donaustadtstraße and Am Langen Felde (to Kagraner Platz). There are two lanes in each direction available for private traffic - except during the summer holidays. In some cases, side streets become dead ends in the short term. Wintzingerodestraße is one-way. Due to the extent of the redesign and reorganization of the road cross-section, the work will last until the end of June 2025.

Belt West

There are several major projects planned in the Belt West catchment area: Over the next few years, 1,9 km of Outer Mariahilfer Straße will be redesigned to be climate-friendly and will in future be a one-way route out of the city. In the first construction phase this year, the section from Mariahilfer Belt to Clementinengasse will be given a new face with greenery, street furniture and a structurally separated two-way cycle path. As part of the renovation, installations will also be replaced and the connection to the district heating or cooling network will be established. Once the installation work has been completed, the lane heading out of town will be available again. The main construction work of the 1st construction phase will be carried out from July 1 to September 2024.

Hütteldorfer Straße

Not far from there, a two-way cycle path will be built on Hütteldorfer Straße in the area from Urban-Loritz-Platz to Johnstraße from April 29th to November 15th. Between Löhrgasse or Wurzbachgasse to Huglgasse, Hütteldorfer Straße will be routed out of town as a one-way route due to the work, while inwards the city will be rerouted via Märzstraße towards Neubauzeile. There will be some traffic restrictions for work in the intersection areas.

Christian Broda Square

From mid-May to mid-November, Christian-Broda-Platz in Mariahilf will be redesigned. In addition, two one-way cycle paths will be created on Mariahilfer Straße in the section from Stumpergasse to Belt. In the area between the inner and outer Mariahilfer Belt, one lane will be used for the work.

Augarten Bridge

The Augarten Bridge is an important transport connection over the Danube Canal between the districts of Leopoldstadt and Alsergrund. The upcoming overall repair will start on June 3rd and is scheduled to be completed in summer 2025. At the same time, the tram tracks will be renewed between June 3rd and September 1st. Tram line 31 cannot run during this time. Lane restrictions are required for the work; a lane will always remain open for pedestrians and cyclists.

Aspern Bridge

The repair work on the Aspern Bridge that began last year will be completed at the end of May this year. Both the Augarten Bridge and the Aspern Bridge will then benefit from the new, economical LED lighting, which will also be converted.

Nobility Bridge

From June to the end of August, extensive repair work will be carried out on the Edelsinn Bridge and the cycling infrastructure in this area will be expanded at the same time. There are two lanes in each direction in June and one lane in each direction in July and August. From June 2024 to April 2025 there will probably be a lane reduction in the Edelsinnstrasse area. In coordination with the city's bridge repair work, the section of Breitenfurter Straße from Hetzendorfer Straße to Altmannsdorfer Straße as well as the Altmannsdorfer Straße - Sagedergasse plateau will be renovated and repaired. This work is carried out in the summer months during school holidays.

Matzleinsdorfer Platz

Work on the subway expansion continues around Matzleinsdorfer Platz. Until the end of November 2024, Wiener Linien will also be working on sealing the tunnel ceiling of the U-Strab (under-paved tram) with subsequent repairs to the road surface. The redesign of Aspernbrückengasse and Praterstrasse, which began last year, including the climate-friendly redesign of Nestroy-Platz and Rosl-Berndt-Platz, will be completed at the end of 2024.

West exit

The western exit can be opened to traffic again as early as this summer. Like every year, there will be local concrete field renovations on Vienna's Belt Street, this year on the outer belt.

Ottakring and Hernals

To supply the Viennese population with the best drinking water, another supra-regional transport pipe, the 5th main line, is being laid. From June 2024 to April 2025, work will be carried out as part of the first construction phase from Mildeplatz via Degengasse, Lienfeldergasse, Albrechtskreithgasse, Redtenbachergasse and via Schadinagasse to the Richthausenstraße - Lidlgasse intersection.

At Tabor and Nordbahnstrasse

There will be further improvements for cycling in Am Tabor and Nordbahnstrasse; construction will take place here from July 2024 to May 2025. More safety and comfort for cyclists are also planned in the area of the Rechts Wienzeile from Getreidemarkt to Operngasse and at Karlsplatz from Operngasse to Kärntner Straße. This work is scheduled for the months of July and August.

Favorites

In Favoriten, a two-way cycle path will be built from May to December in Davidgasse and Herndlgasse in the section from Laxenburger Straße to Gudrunstraße. There will also be a bus lane in the future to speed up public transport. During the work, changed traffic routes will be necessary; in some cases, side streets leading into the building will temporarily become dead ends. From July onwards, one-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of Landgutgasse in the Sonnwendgasse to Laxenburger Straße section; the planned end of construction is May 2025. The work will be implemented in several phases.

Floridsdorf

From mid-May, the areas of Floridsdorfer Hauptstrasse from Matthäusz-Jiszda-Strasse to Schloßhofer Strasse and Prager Strasse from Am Spitz to Sinawastingasse will be rebuilt in Floridsdorf. This allows two-way cycle paths and tree planting to be realized. This is from May 14.5th. A one-way route of Floridsdorfer Hauptstraße is required in various sections depending on the construction phase in the direction of travel out of town. A diversion will be signposted for the direction of travel into the city.
