The “Game of Kings” became the Game of the Queen: none other than Olympic champion Maria Muzychuk awarded the Queen’s Gambit Alfreda Hausner tournament in the Grätzl-Zentrum Kaisermühlen an almost majestic flair. The 29-year-old Ukrainian took part in a simultaneous game on 20 game boards and then presented the prizes to the winners. “We were very happy that a real chess star was with us,” beamed Wohnpartner area manager Claudia Huemer, who organized the successful event with her team.

The games were played in the “Under 14” and “Over 14” categories; the age range actually ranged from seven to 78 years. Men were allowed to take part in the simultaneous chess game, but not in the tournament, whose namesake was the state and national chess champion Alfreda Hausner, who died in 2019. She lived in the Goethehof and played in Café Winter, where the Grätzl-Zentrum Kaisermühlen is now located.
