Favoriten Clinic: Construction begins for high-tech laboratory

A state-of-the-art new building for the Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics is being built on the premises of the Favoriten Clinic. A joint groundbreaking ceremony took place with all those involved in the project.

The Favoriten Clinic takes another significant step towards modernization and future-oriented medical care. Along the Triester Street A high-tech laboratory is being built on the premises of the Favoriten Clinic, which will enable the entire range of laboratory medical diagnostics.

Planning for the new building began during the COVID pandemic. And laboratory diagnostics in particular has a significant impact with its research and development work Pandemic control contributed. The new laboratory building will house state-of-the-art technology, which will massively support laboratory medicine research activities at the location. “This project is part of the largest investment program in the history of the Vienna Health Association. We are investing in research and thus in Vienna’s future as a center of medical innovation,” emphasizes the city council Peter Hacker the long-term goal of the city of Vienna.

“In the more than 130-year history of this hospital, medical innovations have always been advanced and the clinic has adapted to the challenges of the times,” said WIGEV General Director Evelyn Kölldorfer-Leitgeb. “Today we are taking another step in modernization with the start of construction for our laboratory.”

High-tech equipment for top workplaces

The employees of the Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics were actively involved in project planning. “The integration of our employees was and is very important to us. They help shape their future workplace and thus make a significant contribution to the success of the project,” says Barbara Schubert, administrative director of the Favoriten Clinic. “With the new building, we are creating an environment that not only impresses with its technical equipment, but also with a working atmosphere that promotes innovation. Our specialists should be able to work in the best possible working environment,” explains Manuela Foedinger, head of the Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics.

Sustainability at the center

The new laboratory with a usable area of ​​approx. 2.000m2 on a total of 4 floors (including the basement) is expected to be put into operation in 2026. Michael Lichent, Managing Director of Projektentwicklungs- und Baumanagement GmbH, emphasizes the sustainable construction of the laboratory building: “As with all of our projects, we rely on ecological materials and sustainable energy concepts.” A compact, clear structure optimizes the surface-to-volume ratio – so it offers as much as possible lots of space with little space consumption. The wooden facade optimizes the thermal properties of the building. With this construction project, the Vienna Health Association is taking a further step to support the sustainability goals of the City of Vienna.

WIGEV Deputy General Director Herwig Wetzlinger underlines the importance of the project: “We are investing 750 million euros in the modernization of the Favoriten Clinic and are creating an infrastructure that will ensure the highest quality of medical care in the future.”
